Khemchand Ramlal Kurdia, is the youngest of the 3 siblings and stayed with his parents in a low-income community in Chembur area of Mumbai. His elder brother moved to another city permanently after he got married and the elder sister lived with them. Khemchand’s father had a small business of making shoes and mother used to work as a domestic help to support the family.

When Khemchand was in grade 12, his father passed away due to severe illness which was a big shock to the family. Grief-stricken Khemchand barely managed to complete his 12th grade and later had to look after the father’s business which was already not doing well. During the same period, Khemchand’s elder sister also got married which left just Khemchand and his mother to look after each other. His mother kept working as domestic help and Khemchand was trying hard to bring the business back. As the business was already doing bad Khemchand could do very little from saving it from closing down due to losses incurred post his father’s sudden death. Khemchand was extremely low and lonely during this phase due to sudden departure of his father and sister moving away from him. He was clueless about his future and mother’s wellbeing as well.

Khemchand came across Bright Future’s Training program when he was struggling to find a job to support his mother. A brief discussion with Bright Future team gave him an idea on how he could develop his communication skills which will help him secure a steady job. Khemchand signed up for the 3 months program and started coming regularly to the sessions. Meeting other people of his age and spending time with them in the class, helped Khemchand open up and make good friends. He developed his communications skills in English language with the activity-based learning inputs given by the facilitator in the class. With the progress he saw in himself, Khemchand’s was confident that he will get a good job post his training and his dream really came true. Post the training, through Bright Future’s placement assistance Khemchand secured a job in Crosswords Bookstore in Vashi. Khemchand’s mother is very proud of her child who has stood by her through thick and thin and today supports her by doing a job based on his merit. A boy, who had once given up on life, has today overcame his hardships and has received awards and appreciation at work for his outstanding customer service skills. We at Bright Future are very proud of Khemchand’s grit and resilience!!
